My
doctor has recommended ECT therapy for my acute mania. Is this safe?
Trust
me; ECT is not what it was in the 60s and 70s. Today it is a very safe bona
fide method of treating depression. A few studies have shown that acute mania
that does not respond to medications can be helped by ECT. You may require
several sessions. Unfortunately, it is also slightly expensive. About 70% of
patients with acute mania may benefit from ECT. Unfortunately, the results are
not sustained forever.
