I am scheduled for an MRI of my shoulder. Is
this test associated with any complications?
As long as you do not have any metal or
foreign implants, you are fine. The strong magnetic field can distort or cause
malfunction of pacemakers or other metal implants in the body. Surgical clips
can become loose and so on. However, today the newer generation of MRI machines
are compatible with many metals and you should first speak to the radiologist. You
may receive a contrast called gadolinium but unlike the dye used for a CT Scan,
this dye is very rarely associated with allergic reaction.
I would not worry about complications as they are rare, but MRIs do
cost a lot of money Expect a bill of $1500-$2000.
